During May and in honor of Mother's Day, Highland Heights Dental will donate a smile makeover to a survivor of breast cancer. This includes veneers and/or crowns in order to restore the smile of one who has suffered from the disease. In 2013, Dr. Smith decided to extend this offer to all survivors of cancer. Anyone who has suffered the effects of cancer is eligible for nomination.* The current value given since the start of this program is $59,364.
Dr Craig Smith started this program five years ago with his mother-in-law, Kris L., who battled breast cancer since 1995. In 2007, he reconstructed her upper smile and continued with the lower the following year. She has since developed stage 4 metastatic cancer and finished her fight December 16, 2012.
Since the makeover and before her passing, she enjoyed smiling and was happy with the change. A change in her smile brought hope and a new glimmer of light in her ongoing battle with cancer. For this reason, it was decided to extend this offer to others. Another reason is to raise awareness. The medication that has kept his mother-in-law healthier was discovered by research funded by the Susan B Komen Foundation. If funding helped discover that remarkable medication, someday a cure might be found before the 50 percent probability of affecting his wife and daughters.
Thank you to those who nominated a survivor or included themselves. Congratulations to Ginny for winning the makeover in 2009, Sandi for 2010, Pascoalina for 2011, Cindi for 2012, and Denise for 2013. We plan on continuing our tradition of a complimentary smile makeover to a survivor of breast cancer in the Salt Lake Valley and surrounding counties.
The nomination process for 2013 has finished and treatment is currently underway. Nominations for 2014 are being accepted. Please make your nominations before May 31, 2014. If you make your nomination now, we will hold it till May. Visit the www.survivorbrightsmiles.com for addition information; however, this site is the official site. You can see our survivor's change at our facebook page or in the survivor gallery.
To nominate your survivor or yourself, please submit a close-up smile photo (teeth included). Also include an explanation of the survivor's story, so we may learn more about them (please limit to one page). Applications can be dropped off in person to the address below or submitted one of the following ways:
Also please donate to the race for the cure at www.komenslc.org. Our goal is to increase awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research.
*Only survivors, male or female, of any form of cancer are eligible. The winner needs to visit our office in Salt Lake City to complete the work. Depending on each case, the number of appointments to complete treatment varies. Therefore the winner needs to make travel accommodations in order to receive treatment. In the past, winners have been from the Salt Lake City area, but are not limited to here. If not chosen for the current year, nominations may reapply the following year. The winner has until August 31st of the winning year to start treatment. If he or she is unable to start work, another nomination will be chosen. The treatment is comprised of anterior work to revitalize the survivor's smile which consists of around eight anterior crowns or veneers. Not redeemable for cash.
