Porcelain Onlays

A porcelain onlay is sometimes also referred to as a partial crown and are a great alternative to a crown in some cases. Porcelain onlays, in many cases, can be made in our office with the same technology we use to make our same-day crowns. Cerec onlays are made in our office in one appointment. This eliminates the need to create a temporary only and schedule a second or third visit. Once the onlay is made Dr. Smith permanently cements it onto the tooth.

Onlays are the ideal solution in some cases because they preserve more of the natural tooth, but are just as strong. Porcelain onlays look very close to the natural tooth. Onlays can be utilized to conservatively repair teeth that have large defective fillings or have been damaged by decay or trauma.

Advantages of a Porcelain Onlay

Conserve more tooth structure - a majority of teeth with existing fillings are in the in-between stage of a crown and a filling. If you don't need a crown, save tooth structure with a partial crown, onlay or inlay.
Save Time - one visit you're done as opposed to two. Great for patients who have to travel long distances or busy parents who find it difficult to leave children for two visits. T
Strength - porcelain onlays are made out of Emax (Lithium disilicate) a solid piece of porcelain that can be matched to the color of the existing tooth.
No extra cost - a Cerec porcelain onlay costs no more than a laboratory onlay. The value is time. In fact, patients save money with the partial crown method.

Cerec onlays are an excellent same-day procedure, and a majority of treatments can be performed this way. Yet we do not use or recommend them in every case. Each patient is evaluated on their individual circumstance and needs. This way we personalize each treatment plan. Cerec technology is an advanced 3D imaging that not only provides crowns but gives us the ability to provide porcelain onlays. Onlays give us the strength of a crown while preserving more tooth structure. Onlays are dependent on mainly one thing - how much tooth structure is left. If there is enough natural tooth structure to support an onlay, then we will recommend the cheaper restoration. It preserves more natural tooth structure. Read more about Cerec and Same Day Crowns.
